Pretty easy as long as you have clear skies with no light pollution. Check out the camera settings on the right had side under the pic.

I've always wanted to know how to do this? DId you use some kind f exposure or somnething?

:iconniv24:
Niv24 Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2010  Hobbyist Photographer
Hi, if you have a look at the camera data on the right hand side you will see its a single exposure of 963 seconds or 16 minutes. You need to use a lens with a large aperture in this case it was f/2.8. Hope this helps

:iconenslavedbydragons:
enslavedbydragons Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2010
Definitely. But one more question. Can I take a picture like this using the same technique, only with a standard lens that happens to allow you to have an aperture of f/2.8?

:iconniv24:
Niv24 Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2010  Hobbyist Photographer
Sure. The photo can be taken with any lens, the large aperture just allows the most possible light to the sensor which therefore picks up the most possible stars while keeping the ISO low.

two things, how do you keep your noise down? Or do you use mutlishots and layer them?

Second how the hell do you keep the dew off the lens?

:iconniv24:
Niv24 Featured By Owner Aug 6, 2010  Hobbyist Photographer
Hi, This is shot at ISO100 to keep the noise as low as possible, f/2.8 to let in the most light, Also the cold temps help keep the noise down, finally strong noise reduction in adobe lightroom (can use high noise reduction as there in no fine detail in the shot which would be softened).

This is one shot 963 seconds or 16min long

No fog on the lens is just a fluke

Cheers
