There is an amazing number of gun emplacements throughout NZ. When I was last in Dunedin I was amazed to learn there was a threat of a Russian attack in the 1880's! the guns at the Albatross colony were for them, not for WWII. Apparently the locals also had 'fast steam boats' that had explosives tied to the end of a long bow (as in pole sticking out from the front of the ship) that would "quickly penetrate the hull of a ship, and then hurry away" I was gobsmacked because I didn't realise we were worried about the Russians at all
